Moraitika Corfu

The village Moraitika is located 20 km south of Corfu Town and extends along the coastal road which connects Corfu Town and Lefkimmi in the south of the island. Due to the large influx of tourists during the last 30 years, Moraitika has developed and become one of the most popular tourist destinations on Corfu.

Moraitika is divided into 3 parts. First, the old village is a residential area, where the homes of the locals can be found along with a few traditional tavernas. Its narrow streets and small, picturesque dwellings are covered in flowers. In contrast the town centre, along the main road, is buzzing with nightlife and has a variety of tavernas, restaurants, bars and shops. Lastly, the coastal part of the village is where the sandy beaches of Moraitika can be found as well as a variety of hotel resorts and apartments.

Moraitika is built near the mouth of the Messonghi River; which itself forms a natural border between the villages of Moraitika and equally pretty Messonghi. According to archaeological excavations, the area has been inhabited since Neolithic times. The ruins of a temple from the 3rd century B.C. have also been found here.

While staying in Moraitika you will have the opportunity to visit the quaint little neighbouring villages, such as Chlomos, displaying excellent examples of traditional architecture along its narrow, cobbled streets, Chlomatiana with its church of the Virgin Mary, as well as the village of St. Dimitrios. Remnants of a Roman palace and baths have also been found in the area. In the backdrop of the settlements, the mountain of Chlomos, Kontrakas beach, Lake Korission and the beach of Issos (a Natura 2000 protected site) offer tranquil hiking routes and excursions for those wishing to explore nature. Nestled among the sites of the neighbouring area is the palace Achilleion, built by the Empress of Austria, Elisabeth of Bavaria, (also known as Sissi), which displays the famous sculpture "Dying Achilles" and other marvelous artistic works such as paintings and frescoes.
